BREAKTHROUGH YOUR LIMITING BELIEFS
Experience, growth & contribution – are your beliefs limiting you?
Bella Enahoro
Sometimes we dream, we hope, desire something which is just not happening for us. Maybe we have encountered too many closed doors, too many refusals. Maybe no-one in your family has ever done it before, so why you? Maybe you’ve decided it’s too late in life for you. Or maybe you think if it was do-able someone would already have done it. Whatever the reason, it’s easy to take ourselves ‘out of the game’.
But the dream stays nagging away at you. What would you really like to do with your life? Do you want to go back to school, do you want to travel, open a business, go for that career change, stop work and spend more time with the family, leave the 9-5 world? What is it you really desire? Maybe go into some kind of cross country trek. Who knows? But you’ve stopped short. You’ve relegated it to the category of ‘wouldn’t be nice if...?’ which is another way of dismissing and discounting your dream as not possible for you, at least not this life time. But what if you could?
What would you like to experience? In what ways would you like to grow and expand your life? What would you like to contribute to the world?
What if it was only a matter of what you believe? Our beliefs have such a hold on us that we deem them to be true. You may say to yourself, the reason you believe it is because it’s true. But actually a belief is only a thought you ‘deem’ to be true. We may assume it’s true because from where we currently stand, we can’t see a way to fulfil it. Now I’m not talking about clear delusion. Think about those big talent shows where a contestant announces themselves to be the next ‘Whitney Houston’ or Michael Jackson and invariably they aren’t. But delusion cuts the other way too – where a contestant creeps on stage thinking they’re nothing but willing to have a go anyway and they open their mouths and they are spectacular. Examples are far too numerous to mention.
But if you don’t go for your dream what happens? It sits there haunting you. And there aren’t enough ways to distract yourself from its call on your life. No matter how much you squash it down or allow others to belittle you out of dream, it sits there haunting you.
Don’t allow others to belittle your dream, dissuade you, ridicule or mock you out of your dream. Not even you. It’s easy to internalise this attitude towards your dreams. Don’t you do it to yourself. Sometimes dream take longer to materialize than we had hoped or anticipated. Or they show up in a different way than we had imagined. But we owe it to ourselves to ‘give it a shot’.
Dreams are given to us to fulfil. That’s why they agitate us so when we balk at them. They are in fact the next stage of our lives calling us up. If we ‘go for it’ we move to the next stage in our lives. If we don’t we get stuck and life hurts.
If we ‘give it a shot’ and it happens, life opens up at a whole new level. And I have to say, that for myself, sometimes just ‘going for it’ makes all the difference. Just that alone changes our lives for the better in ways we could not have imagined before.
Go for it. Just one small step. Maybe as small as researching on the internet. Maybe as small as speaking to someone who has already done what you’re desiring to do. Give yourself a chance to expand your life.
